Where would bankruptcy details from 1881 be found?

I have been looking up one of my family surnames on theoriginalrecord d o t c o m. Because it is a very rare surname, I think anybody I find with that name must be a relly of some kind. (I can't really see what to do if I find a match for any of my other family surnames on that site as they are much more common so they come up with loads and loads of matches and I have no way of knowing which, if any, are my ancestors!) Anyway, to get back to the point, these are the matches: Debtors, Insolvents and Bankrupts (1881) Bills of sale (binding assets to a creditor/lender), insolvencies and bankruptcies in England and Wales, April to June 1881 GLASSCODINE. Cost: £6.00. Cost: £6.00. (Glasscodine being the surname.) Does anybody know if there is anywhere else I could look for details of the bankruptcy without paying £6? (I tried the London Gazette but their website only goes back as far as 1900 at the moment.) Kate.

You could try the Times index, it lists bankruptcies, which will tell you the relevant Times edition you need. But beware as around this time it is very inaccurate as I know to my cost. Personally I would pay the £6 as you could spend a lot of money finding a library with the index plus microfilm of the Times Good Luck John

Kate, Bankruptcy is a line I am following with my gggrandad, Robert Ferguson.Last recording in 1878. He and his wife disappear and the children end up in the workhouse. I cannot find the death of either and think he may have gone abroad. I looked at the Times index and found a possible R. Ferguson but when I looked in the Times it was not there. I have looked at the site you mention and it is very interesting. I have found 10 possibles, that would be a cost of £60!!!! I would gladly pay £6 if I knew it was the right one. There is no contact address to moan to......lol John
