Any random ideas shouted out may help when I least expect it! For example, you've just reminded me to let my Mother know her aunt Jean was actually christened Jane... One of the problems is, I'm relying on my Mother's memory of my Father's family. Oh, and it's great-grandma's Maiden name I'm trying to find, if that's unclear. cheers! Gordon

Dont know if this will help but Jane often gets called Jean. Does your mother have a middle name? could be that. Give her a call. My Dad has been a great help to me in getting me started. As I tell him thing's it jogs his memory, he then come away with more stuff. Just had a thought ,it should be on your mother birth cert..well on the Scottish one it is. Marion

Georgina, I am aware of the GRO service, but I always look for alternatives before paying for other people to do the work for me! Marion, Her Maiden name is one thing I'm trying to find out. Although I haven't asked my Mother if she has any idea of that... Hmm, another phone call needed... cheers! Gordon

Hi Do you know her mothers name? Because if her parents were married in Scotland, you could get the marriage on Scotlandspeople marriages go up to 1930,deaths 1955. Marion

It appears that on my Mother's side I can trace my ancestry back to Adam*, but on my Father's side I can't even trace a great-grandmother... I need to track down my Grandmother's burth certificate. I have her name, date of birth and Father's name, (Jane Hall, 1st August 1912, Arthur Hall) but I don't know where she was born. I check the BDM index for that quarter, and the only two Jane Halls have middle initials (which her Marriage and Death records don't have) and are in Bridlington and Gateshead, which our family have absolutely no connection with. Checking the next quarter, in case her parents missed the six-week deadline, I find two records without middle initials (in York and Prescott respectively) and another in St Glave with a middle initial. So, in order to narrow things down I talk to my Mother. She thinks than Grandma was born in Bellshill, Scotland. Oh. Now normally, I'd check to see that a record exists before trying to order it, but I don't know of any way of searching the Scottish index after 1905, like you can the English and Welsh one. Does anybody know of one? Is it worth checking the local LDS Family History centre? Do I have to get someone in Edinburgh to go to the Scottish GRO? Any other ideas? cheers! Gordon *Not literally to Adam. Not unless I rely on the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Bible and a Speculative Tribalpages tree that shows one of my ancestors descended from Charlemagne, the Emporere Claudius, King Caractacus and Old King Cole for my sources!
