Is it correct, that the trees on Ancestry are open to all? I've been tempted to use it as friends say it's really good but I'm a bit worried about my tree being open to all...(not that there's any secrets in it) but you know what I mean. Jean

you can privatise it have a go its brilliant I love it just went to a name in mine and it said had matches clicked on it and the census records for this man all came up fantastic

Hmm I didn't know you could private it either. Might just have to give it a shot over there. What other usefull things does it do? and is there any way to get tree from here to there without copying it one by one?

hi you can import a gedcom into it so no need to add all the names seperately just start by adding your name to the head of it just nudged up a thread about it

A friend said you just put the first name in and it brings up all the matches from Ancestry, also you don't have to put details in that you don't know (unlike GR). You can also print a tree off.....she's singing it's praises. I'll have a go tomorrow.

A word of warning... Ancestry one world tree: someone (who I unfortunately sent more info to than I should; 'though I did ask them to keep it private. (I was new and I trusted them!)) has added the info to Ancestry One World Tree where it is available to anyone who searches the name. This is not info on living people but more recently deceased, which is quite upsetting. Please be careful what details you pass to others. Heather

Ancestry have two types of tree One world tree which is an attempt to link everyone in the world. Anyone can submit data and it is available to anyone who wants to view it. You can either pay to subscribe to it or if you submit a gedcom they will give you matching information. Anyone is also allowed to provide a different version of the person's details. As you can imagine some of the imformation is very strange and you are more likely to match if some of your relations went to America espescially Utah. I think a family with a similar name to my grandmothers were Mormons and she is on one world tree so I investigated. A typical entry might be birth place Bath Linconshire one tree, Bath Somerset two trees. You can start a one world tree at any point so you need only enter details of the ancestor in question. It only gives you details of ancestors not other relatives but there is a link to other ancestry members interested in this person which might link you to the submitter. Ancestry have also introduced another type of tree which can be either private or public which they call a personal tree. This has several useful features such as the ability to insert pictures and a time line for each person so you can see at a glance how old they were when they got married or moved. It also searches for census references and lets you attach them to the person. It will also tell you of links with other personal trees. I could not link to my ancestors on one world tree for some reason. I checked and they are still there but via a rootsweb site if that makes a difference.

I was still deciding what to do...but after reading Marie's thread I think I've changed my mind!! It's quite understandable that names are going to go into a database....afterall that's what Ancestry is all about and why we use it. Mind, when you think about it, nothing is secret on a computer.
