I'm going up a week on Weds. and want to make my time as profitable as possible. Will have a list of b/m/d/ to check out! Besides parish registers what else would you recommend? Jan

Don't know about South Shields, but I've dealt with North Shields via email and they were VERY helpful. They keep copies of the South Shields News there which is pretty well indexed with files of cuttings for certain surnames which may well be worth checking out, and North Shields also had old maps and electoral rolls at least for the area and even provided me with some old photos of the street I was interested in. I would try and speak with the local archivist and ask. You will be lucky indeed if you cover every single thing you'd like to in just one day. I would expect to have to take two or three trips until I found my feet. I've been to Manchester Library twice now, and am still finding out new things and a reason to go back again for something I missed or didn't have time for last time. These days, I write myself a list and number the things I am looking for in order of preference and work through it accordingly. Even so, you will soon find that time will run away with you. It always does.

A trawl through second hand bookshops (for books of local interest), and a look for old postcards. Jay

Thanks for suggestions! My priority has to be births - I have two children with the same name with births registered in same quarter, and both died weeks later - in the same quarter! One has to belong to my ggparents but whose child is the other? Then deaths - my gggparents (before 1837, must be!) Then marriages - which family did all the Elizabeths, Janes and Margarets come from? And I know that the family moved around and probably used most of the churches in South Shields! I like the idea of second-hand shops - my other hobby!!! Any more suggestions welcome! Jan

Could you get the number for them and address please. A list of what they do hold would be very helpful if possible. I have been in touch with some of the churches and they have been very helpful so would suggest that you go into some of those you know you are linked to and speak to the vicar/priest. Some of them are very into church history and can fill you in on all sorts of interesting facts. Well worth a try.

If you have found any deaths in your family that resulted in inquests, you could look up the newspaper inquest report at the library.
