Can anyone decipher the birth place of Tom Lawson age 5, (1876) son of the Tom Lawson as below on 1881 Census. It is somewhere in Yorkshire and I think starts with a 'D' In 1891 the family are at 132 Ellesemere St, Barton upon Irwell, Lancs, when Tom senior is a ship canal labourer and I still can't decipher the place of birth of Tom Junior. Richard (1878) was born at Saddleworth, Yorks if that's any help. 1881 Census: Name: Tom Lawson Age: 37 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844 Relation: Head Spouses's Name: Sophia Gender: Male Where Born: Great Hale, Lincoln, England Civil parish: Ashby County/Island: Lincolnshire Country: England Street address: The Screeds Condition as to marriage: Married Education: Employment status: View image Occupation: Ironstone Miner Registration district: Glanford Brigg Sub registration district: Winterton Any ideas gratefully recieved, thanks Jennifer |

Its Dent Head I think. Father an ironstone miner looks as if he moved around for the mining judging by the various places of birth of the children. Anne |

1881 Looks like Dlents Head. which can't be right. My Yorkshire geog is non-existent and I can't see anything on Genuki's list of Yorkshire towns & parishes that looks like this. nell |

If the father is later building canals, then he may have been building railways when Thomas Junior was born. Dent Head is on the Settle and Carlisle railway - a tremendous feat of engineering and hard labour for the navvies. It was completed in 1876!! anne |

Thanks everyone. I also think is is Dent Head, I ggogled and up came the Settle Carlisle Railway. Dent is in the reg district of Sedbergh and I have found a birth entry for June 1875 for Thomas Lawson reg in the Sedburgh region so think I must be on the right track. Can anyone find his in 1901 please? I have searched and searched for the whole family without success. Jennifer |
