It is quite common for relatives to be listed as visitors, rather than with their relationship. I suggest you look at siblings of the head of the household, or his wife, and see if any married an Abbott, it was quite commomn for large families to have one or more of their children brought up by relatives. Also, Thomas may have been orphaned, and the family took him in. Jennifer |

I have found that in 1841 a boy called Thomas Abbott aged 1 was staying with my family. In the 1841 census the relation to the head of the family is not stated. However, in the 1851 census, Thomas Abbott is again down as a visitor to the family aged 10. I thought this was very peculiar! On both occasions, the family's daughter is living with her husband in the house, with two children in 1851. I wondered what the chances were of Thomas Abbott (surnames completely different!) being the daughter's illegitimate son? But why would the child be named as a visitor? Any ideas? Thanks |
