Linda, the 'partial index' on ancestry will just be from FreeBMD's transcription, so it could well be a typo. If you check the actual image and the page number is different on there, you should definitely go with what the page number is on the image. (You can report it to FreeBMD as an error if you want to, by the way, via the FreeBMD website.) I think some confusion has crept in here because there are some pages which were originally handwritten and then typed up by the GRO, but I don't think that is what you are talking about here. Kate. |

The checking point is supposed to work, but i have heard of instances where it doesn't.I updated my last post just as you were posting. The advantage to the local office is they don't need the GRO ref,(it means nothing to them, but the GRO index does give you the approximate time) Glen |

Thanks Glen, I was typing at the same time as you, I have never ordered through the local office before, just through the GRO Linda |

Thank you Glen and Kathleen. Sorry for my slow reply, i was doing an NBI look up on the other board It is not on Yorkshire bmd When I order the cert, do I go with the 8 or the 7. Are the typed versions solely an Ancestry transcription, or are they the records the GRO go with. I have noticed that there is an option to have a reference checked, but have never used this before. if I ticked that, would it pick up the problem before it cost me money? Linda |

The typed index will be later,so more likely to have a typo or mistranscription in it. It might pay to try the local office if you are wary. At least with a name, narrow timespan (you know the quarter) and district, they can look through the register for you. The North Yorks Council website will tell you where and who to apply too, fees etc. They estimate to get the cert away in two days after receiving the application. Glen |

I have Harriot Hutchinson born April-June 1849 Whitby Yorkshire On the partial Ancestry search the reference is given as vol XXIV p 637 When you look at the image, however , I am sure it is 638 Could some kind person look and see what they think. I want to order this cert, so do I go with the typed transcription, or what the image says? Linda |
