The information on either death certs or gravestones is only as good as the knowledge of the person who registered the deaths/ordered the stones so all could be wrong. I guess dates of death are more likely correct on certificates as the headstone wouldn't have been carved until some time after the death (though there might be a mistranscription on the cert) The age on the certificate of the one who died first may be more correct as the spouse would have more knowledge of age than children or other relations. The headstone may well have been ordered by children some time after the death and they would be less likely to know their parents' exact ages, or to remember what info was given when the deaths were registered. My gt grandmother's headstone has the right age but the wrong year of death on it. I think perhaps it wasn't carved until her husband died about 5 years later. |

Hi Cherie i know that the information that is on the death certificate is only as true as the person that gives the information. Jen |

Today i finally got 2 death certs for my grt grandparents, who both were born, lived and died in southern ireland. I have a photo which my gran took for me last year of their gravestone and the info doesnt match, which would you believe?? The ages and dates of death dont match!! my gran died in nov 1993 aged 101 according to her cert and 100 on her headstone, one also says the 10th and the other 28th? my grt grandad was 85 on his headstone and 81 on his death cert but luckily the dates correspond on his, again which should i believe? ive tried to locate birth certs but they dont exist so think they may not have been registered,im not sure and not familiar with irish certs. |
