Hi everyone, can anyone tell me what a 'Society boy' would have been in 1881 (taken from census) John was aged 15 living away from home, with about 100 other boys..all about the same age and all Society boys.....I am guessing it was something to do with the Sea, as the address is: 'Marine Society Ship Warspite' Charlton Piers Census Place Woolwich, Kent, England Would it be a sort of training school for the Navy prehaps, would his parents have paid to send him there?....any help would be appreciated. many thanks......Lilly

Basic info 'The Warspite The Marine Society The Marine Society was founded by Joseph Hanway at the outbreak of the Seven Years’ War (1756) in response to the shortage of volunteers for the Navy. As an incentive to volunteering, the Society provided the men with a complete sea uniform.' all you have to do is google.
