I have the marriage Cert for Joseph Hill and Clara Greenland May 28th 1860 in Westbury Clara (born in Newport but no idea why as the family lived in Wiltshire) had a father called William who was a shoe maker (cordwainer) - all correct on the cert Joseph born in Westbury had a father called James The certificate though says the father was called Joseph. I thought I'd made a mistake but the witnesses are Jacob Hill (name of Joseph's brother) and Paulina Greenland (name of Clara's sister). No ages given - just 'full age' - (aaargh why did they do that?) Anyway - do you think the registrar could have made a mistake?

Probably just a mistake. Wrote the J for James and carried on with Joseph instead. I have a cert where the bride's name and her sister's are the wrong way round!! Janice

If father's occupation on the marriage cert and the birth cert are the same its probably a mistake. My husband's gt gt grandfather was Jewish. Some certs say Zalig, others Solomon. I was puzzled as although I couldn't find another birth for Zusman Hart, the name of the father didn't match - till I discovered the death cert where it says Solomon Zalig Hart. I also have people who change their name on a census for no apparent reason, or decide to invent a new name on their marriage. Zusman's daughter Rose changed to Rosella in later life. nell

If everything else fits, I too would guess it's a mistake. I have a marriage cert which has the bride Janet...with father..Janet, instead of James. My parents' marriage cert. has my father and his father shown with the same 3 given names, but my grandfather was just Henry. Gwyn

Thanks all I've checked and there is no record of a Joseph with a father joseph on the 1851 Census for the county so I'll take it that the name wrong and teh cert is right.
