Just uploaded the latest version of my tree to GR and now I have a few relatives who are generally known by their middle names. The tree viewer, of course, justs lists First and last name. Anyone know of any way of getting it to display the middle name instead? If not, how do YOU deal with those people on your tree? cheers! Gordon

I would suggest by the name recorded on the certificate/baptism. For the simple reason a fellow researcher may not know the person by the middle name, especially if they have come across the individual by documented events. You could always add a note to say aka whoever. Glen

Don't know about getting it to show the middle name, but if you go to the person's details and then click on 'extra details' there is a space to add a 'known as' name, or you can put the details in the 'notes' section. I don't think GR will display a name unless it is put in as the first name. Kath. x

I find that GR will accept names and middle name on the top line where you add your person.. A note could then be added as known by middle name of.. Mo

Thanks for the replies, everybody. Interesting idea, Mo. That may work for short names, but how well does it display longer pairs? It realIy only is a problem with me remembering the names of living relatives. I suspect I'm just going to have to get used to remembering James is Tony and Ann is Lorraine, etc. cheers! Gordon

An Olde Crone Report 11 Aug 2006 23:47

Actually, this is yet another extremely irritating short-coming of the GR tree. So many useless Hot Matches could be avoided by displaying Mary Bell as Mary Ellen Bell in the first place, without various emails back and forth, only to discover that mine is Mary Ellen and yours is Mary Anne. And while I'm moaning - WHY can't birth AND death dates be shown in the name listings? I always enter children who died young, partly out of respect for them and partly to stop myself 'discovering' these people all over again. More emails back and forth before a hopeful Hot Matcher discovers my Mary Bell died aged 2. OC

I agree with you there OC.The number of times i get a message about George Hay (of which i have 6) gets frustrating. At least George Hay 1810-1880 would help narrow down the selections. Glen
