Am I losing my marbles??? If you use Ancestry's 1881 census, am I right in thinking if you ask for people born in Staines (Middlesex) the results show Nil, but if you look at all the people living in Staines, many show as being born there????? Hefty sigh and pass the bottle...................Merry x

Welcome back! I've always found the 1881 search facility on Ancestry different to all the others. Its really annoying but I guess it has something to do with the different way it was indexed in the first place. Anne

Yes....! One village we asked directions to the Quaker meeting house. The lady told us where to park and by the time we had done so, she had knocked the door of the local village historian who was standing by our vehicle as we opened the doors! He showed us round the burial ground and in the Meeting House which is normally locked.....then back to his house to see the original burial registers! Second village, visited the local museum....chatted up the man taking the money.....turned out he knew many of the descendants of one of my cousin branches and got an invite back to his house to see all the photos and other documents etc. Third village, very unexpectedly discovered I am related to just about every person with a gravestone in the Quaker Burial Ground. Rang the front doorbell of the house my ggg-grandparents lived in and got an invite round to see how it looks today. Lovely!! Merry

When I said ''rang the doorbell'' I should have said, ''pulled the bell-pull'' as they still had the Victorian (or older?) wire-operated bell pull outside the front door which rang a real bell inside! Merry

glad you had a nice time - I saw the house of my gggg grandad the other day, and loads of family graves! (from the rich branch). good to be home?

Trouble is, when you get back there's no food and all that washing to be done, plus 143 family history emails and GR messages to be replied to :o(( Merry

I wondered when you were going to get round to the washing. Its easy to see where your priorities lie! OC

The TIP in this thread; Priorities!! Hand over responsibility of washing to other household members,order another bottle to be opened,and tend to important things like messages with all due haste. Glen

I got hubby to put the washing on...............this means I have to accept anything white will now be a delicate shade of bluish grey, but never mind............. Faced Tesco early this morning. Have lots of photos to sort out and that must be done before I forget everything.........! Merry

merry, so glad was good trip, my hubby was raised as quaker, (but doesnt practice the faith) I had similar success, about a month ago, as i had struggled with a grand aunts hubby who got killed in a mining accident in 1940's in the village where i now live. at our local parish hall the had an open day where we could see parish burials from 1897 to 2006, and see the other register where you actually purchase the grave plot, and how much it cost etc.. I was totally amazed, not only did i find aunties hubby, but his mum and dad too, (and where they lived) turns out aunty and hubby lived 4 doors away from where i now live, spooky or what Julie didnt find aunty though buried with him, but may have found her death some 20yrs after he died, but she isnt buried in the village at all

This forgetting lark,It's an age thing,before long it will be affecting me too!!
