CAN ANY ONE HELP WITH THE ABOVE, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT IS IN THEM. ADDRESSES, NAMES, DATES OF BIRTHS, WHERE THEY CAME FROM, I HAVE JUST STARTED MY FAMILY TREE AND I ONLY HAVE WHEN MY GRANDAD DIED, ALL OF MY FAILY DON'T KNOW OR THEY DON'T WANT TO SAY.....

Hi There are some answers on your thread on the records office,but really you don't need the records office to work back th 1837. The records office will really come into it's own for pre 1837 information. The ordinary birth/marriage and death certs will give you addressesoccupations,,names of parents,witnesses and informants.Until you have some details to take you back with some certainty the records office will be very awkard to use. What are you trying to find out? Glen

what BOOKS do you mean? there are loads of BOOKs, all contain different info ( as has already been explained onyour identical thread on the other board)

i am trying to trace my family tree, i dont have much information, on my grandad's death certificate there is no date of birth, so i though the records office might help me trace back through my family. in the records offce do they have sections on dirths, deaths, and marrigess ? I have only just started so any information would be a great help ... thankyou to everyone who relyed to me.......

The London records Office has the gro refs from 1837 for Births marriages & deaths. You still need to do a manual search of each qtr each year for each type of record i.e Births ,Marriages & Deaths. It also has a;ll the available census on microfiche to search plus access via computer to Scottish BMDS. plus assorted other records summarys of records that can be found at Kew ,such as naturlization records

Teresa, I would advise you to read a beginners' guide to tracing your family tree. There are lots of books available and also lots online, I think if you look at your homepage on this very website, for instance, there is a section like that. Or any of the family tree magazines, they always have a section of tips for beginners. One thing I would say is that a death certificate is not usually the best one to start with! If you can start with a birth certificate or marriage certificate and work back from that it will be easier. You will probably find that you will have to order quite a few certificates from the GRO as you progress through your tree, and they cost £7 each. (The kind of information you mention would be in the 'books' of certificates at the GRO, if that is what you mean, but the public are not allowed to go and look at the 'books' of certificates, you have to order a copy.) From what you say I presume you have your grandads death certificate. This should give his age - so you can work out approximately when he was born. You can then look for his birth in the BMD indexes. You should also be able to find his marriage reference in the BMDs - his marriage certificate would give the name of his and his wife´s father and their occupations. You will need to buy some certificates until you can get yourself back to 1901 - you should then be able to find quite a lot of the information from the census returns. If you need some help then put some information on here - your grandads name, his date of death, age at death, where in the country etc etc. - as much information as you have got. Hopefully someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Elaine,the details were taken from a headstone,not from a certificate. There was a duplicate thread on records board which attracted more attention.It appears the family were travellers,possibly a romany family. Glen
