Help on finding a death cert

I'm desperately trying to find my great gran's death cert. She was born Ellen Reason (married surname Taylor) in 1873 in Dover, Kent. We've always been led to believe that she died when my grandad was 3, so as he was born in November 1912 I've searched the death records for 1915-1916 but can't really find anything which looks likely, apart from one entry which tied up with her age at death, and also showed an infant dying at the same time but it was in Prescot which I think is Lancashire way. What info is on a death cert, would it have her maiden name? If not, I guess there's no way I could be sure I had the right one. Any help much appreciated!

Other names know by including previous married names and maiden names are only present on a death cert after 1969., only if the informant knew about them. Before this date you are only likely to get Date and place of death Name, sex and occupation of deceased Cause of death Name and address of informant Date of registration

HI lynda I actually live in dover, have lived here all my life if you want me to do some look ups for you will be willing to do so when I have the time. It has been rumoured that there was a fire down and dover registry office a few years ago before you had to get records from thanet area (ramsgate) and a lot of records were destroyed and damaged. Now you have to go to ramsgate to get any certs. I will do my best to find out anything for you if you want. I am not sure how m uch was destroyed and damaged NIcola

I have just spoken to my husband and he has confirmed that there deffinately was a fire at dover registry office there was records that were destroyed or damaged, it was between 1970 and 1980 but not completely sure or dates. After the fire happened all records were moved to ramsgate and ever since they have stayed there and any new records go to ramsgate too. Nicola

I'd discount making a narrow search of a death. I was told my grandmother's mother died when she was 7 and it turns out she was 11. I was also told my grandfather's mother died when he was 10 and he was 6. People;s memories can be very faulty. nell
