Just adding to that, NORCAP offer a similar service and also have a contact register for adoptees and birth relatives. I have also found out that some local councils have a post-adoption team who are willing to research adoptions and do a trace for you. Naturally, they can only give your contact details to the adopted person and not vice versa. My local team has found an incredible amount of information about the adoption in less than a week.

I just found these services online offered by the General Records Office for a fairly minimal fee. You need to head to teh adoption section at - gro . gov . uk * *obviously delete the spaces. They also offer a search service to re-establish contact between family and friends (except in adoption cases). See their traceline section. Not sure if its any better than what you can find for yourself though but it may be useful to some. I have never heard of these services before and although I can not use the service for my search (the adoption link I am searching for occured outside the UK, I know that it would be potentially beneficial to many people here particularly searching for birth family or adopted family members as well as those searching for missing relatives, so I felt I chould post of its existance to bring it to the attention of other people here who may find it a helpful tool. Good luck with your searches! Gilly c/o Jerome
