Good morning everyone, i need some advice. Many generations of my family all know the story of how my gt gt grandfather came to london during the 1860's after 'accidently' killing a man during a fight in a pub. I have been thinking about trying to find a report in a local paper of that time. I have done a search of the British library and got a few newspapers that were around Suffolk, but not specifically the area my ancestors lived. I just wondered if anyone had any other ideas or if someone belonging to the SFH group knew of any publications (or anything) that i could start with. Sorry for such a long question. Thanks yvette

There are three Suffolk County Record Offices. They are located at Ipswich, Lowestoft and Bury St Edmunds. Each one carries newspapers on microfilm so depending on which area of Suffolk the murder took place, I would get yourself along to the record office or contact the record office and asked them to do a look up for you - there may be a fee for this service. http://www(.)suffolk.gov.uk/LeisureAndCulture/LocalHistoryAndHeritage/SuffolkRecordOffice/ Remove brackets Cheers, Horatia

Thanks Horatio, i was thinking about going to Colindale which is a lot nearer to me, as they hold some papers, it will be like looking for a needle in a haystack as i dont even know if its true or not, yvette

An accidental killing is not a murder, so this is unlikely to have made the national press. What you could try to do is to work out exactly when he left Suffolk and then see if there were any mentions in the quarter-sessions before that - these are hearings before a magistrate, which would occur if he was tried for manslaughter etc. nell
