Thanks for all the replies, I may try ordering a few certs for Fellows born inbetween the years mentioned and see if I can shed any light on it. I know that they are to the same parents those born 1901 and before and those born 1914 and after as I have the deathe certs for the parents ( original's ) one in 1934 and one in 1965. As for looking at the inscription on the grave - the parents ( my great grandparents ) are buried in the most overgrown and neglected cemetary you could imagine, no one gets buried there anymore and it isn't even safe/advisable to go there alone even in daylight, it really is a sorry place Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions Joanne

Have you had a look for a memorial inscription that for my great grandmother lists two children who died in infancy who were buried in the family grave.

Quite common thing. My dad is the youngest of three and the gap is 15 years. My Nan is the oldest then her sister came along 14years later (no children in between or miscarriages). Or it could be that there were miscarriages in between.

The children born pre-1901 will be easy to find on the Census. The children born after 1912 will have the mother's maiden name recorded on the GRO register. The ones between these dates will just be registered with the surname Fellows but no mention of Rowbottom. My guess is that's why you haven't found them yet. Looks like you will have to order every Fellows birth certificate for the registration district in these years or patiently wait for the 1911 Census to be released in 2012!

It happens all the time...there are 13 and 15 years respectively between myself and my brother and sister! I was always called a 'bonus' or a 'miracle' by my mum, but in heated moments when I was younger I used to tell them I knew what bonus meant...a cock up!

Odd thing is, I was helping someone else the other day with the children spread out just like yours. 3 around the turn of the century and then 5 later on. It looked like the husband had died in WW1 and then the last 5 had a different father. Rose

Oh prison now that would be another skeleton - lol, I would love to go back in time and meet them all or I wish I had asked my grandad more when he was alive - I have found out more about his family now he has gone than I ever did when he was alive. Joanne

It may be that they did have children who were stillborn, or died very young. You will have to trawl the indexes for the ones who lived. The stillbirth register is something else.

hiya, the gap might be something as innocent as hubby working away, or prison perhaps, or even army/navy or suchlike, just a few thoughts JUlie

hiya, you need to be searching ancestrys complete index, searching quarter by quarter, after 1911 the mothers maiden name will be next to childs, before this however it isnt http://www*ancestry*co*uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx replace * with dots this wll take you to where you need to be looking, and you need complete index, NOT partial HTH Julie

Possibility of a second marriage? I fell for this some years ago when the second wife had the same christian name as the first one. Closer examination revealed that she was a few years younger, and was also on her second marriage.

Parents Annie Rowbotham born 1876 and Harry Fellows born 1874 First child born 1898, then 1899, 1901 then next one 1914, 1916, 1918, 1919 and fainally 1920. Not really looked at it before but it has suddenly struck me that it seems a big gap to have and I knwo that the children are right that I have as I have spoke to the son of one of them who confirms that names I have. How would I find others born inbetween 1901 and 1914, which are also missing on census who may have died or been given up for adoption etc Joanne
