I may have a lead on a chap who stated on his army papers that he was born LYGO, Armagh. Trouble is I cannot find it anywhere. There was another place mentioned - Lorraghan or Lordraghan. I didnt take a copy of the document at the time as I didnt think he was mine and I'm kicking myself for not noting down which was the parish or barony or township or whatever else they call themselves. Hoping somebody might have heard of it as googling has produced nothing. Many thanks. Lyla |

Thanks, I suppose it could be - off to check if its anywhere near Armagh. The funny thing is that LYGO was clearly printed in capitals whereas the rest of the document was in lower case. I wonder if maybe it's some kind of abbreviation. |

It's not Sligo then. What are you supposed to do when they say they were born in a place that doesnt exist? Oh well, never mind, lets just hope he's not mine. Thanks for looking. Lyla |

That's encouraging - thankyou. I've found a place called Loughgall - do you think that could be it? Need to find an Irish guinea pig to test it out on now! |

Lyla, Do you think Lorraghan or Lordraghan could be LURGAN? (called 'AN LORGAIN' in Irish) Lurgan (An Lorgain, meaning 'the long low ridge of land' in Irish), is a town in County Armagh, Northern Ireland with a population of approximately 25,000. Lurgan is situated in the Craigavon Borough Council area, to the south of Lough Neagh in the centre of Northern Ireland. The town is approximately 30 kilometres (19 miles) southwest of Belfast and is linked by both the M1 motorway and a railway line to Belfast. You could try searching on www.multimap(.)com - you can zoom in and then click on different parts of the map to look for smaller villages in Co. Armagh. SLIGO TOWN is in COUNTY SLIGO - in the Republic of Ireland but is just as far north as COUNTY ARMAGH, but on the west side of Ireland. Here is a list of a list of places in County Armagh, Maybe it will help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_places_in_County_Armagh and a list of villages in Northern Ireland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_villages_in_Northern_Ireland and a list of towns: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_towns_in_Northern_Ireland Good luck!! I think we can rule out Sligo as it is not close enough to Armagh. Lurgan seems quite possible. I think I now need to spend some time googling and reading Irish maps while bearing in mind possible spelling/pronunciation differences. I'm not even sure if this man is mine anyway. Thanks for all your replies. Lyla |

Hi Ann Please thank your daughter and her husband for trying. It is interesting and very useful information to bear in mind when I get brave enough to attempt some of the other Irish names in my tree. I'm pretty certain that the man from Lygo would have come from Northern Ireland because he clearly stated Armagh. The interesting thing is that he enlisted in Glasgow so now I wonder if he just thought he heard Lygo from other family members. Something else to consider anyway. I don't know why I am spending time on this one as he probably isn't even mine! Thanks again for your help Lyla |
