Would they marry in the name they were born with or their step father's name? |

In 1966 my step-brother married using his father's surname. I would think that would be normal unless the child had been officially adopted by the step-father. However (he was 16 when his mother remarried) on census I have seen young stepchildren being called by their stepfather's surname, so they may never know otherwise particually if yours are pre birth certificates. Mavis Not sure if that's helped or not!!! |

Hi Louise Some appear on the census with their stepfather's name then marry using their original surname. Heather |

Thanks its just that if I've got to look at the ancestry beta for 2 sets of names for a 30 year span and one of the names is really common. |

My OH's grandma's father died very young. The wife married again, had more kids, then that husband died. She married a third time and had 2 more. In each census the girl is shown with a different surname. When she married she used her father's name. J |

Louise, I have come across cases of stepchildren marrying under either surname - their birth name or their stepfather's - and I'm not sure that the law specified anything other than the name that they were known by. Sometimes they will give both surnames. You are best to try looking under both really. Kate. |
