I visited a village where my ancestors lived from at least 1837 some I believe still living there until recently. But......what I didn't do is check that the library was open on a Wednesday, needless to say it wasn't! I left home at 8.50 this morning, catching a bus then 2 trains only able to have roughly 3 hours there before returning home again arriving back at about 6pm. If I had done my homework properly who knows what I might have turned up, I always go to the local libraries, if I only managed to an old map I am happy. So don't make the same mistake as me. Check before you go. The village (Ruskington) was simply wonderful, still retaining a lot of the old buildings, and any locals we saw were really pleasant and welcoming. Pauline |

I nearly got caught out like that trying to drop in on Oxford Records Office on my way to somewhere else. Luckily I just had a last check on their website to confirm opening hours and where it was and - aaargh! Plan A falls into waste bin! Christine |

I hope you had a good look round the village church and churchyard? Lots of information to be found in them. |

Christine, I don't think we will be caught out like that again. Certainly enjoyed a look around the village unfortunately the almshouses where my gg grandma spent her last years has gone and not too sure of the other addresses as the census were not too specific. Took lots of photos though. Susan The church was locked and unfortunately no gravestones for my rellies although I didn't really expect any. Recognized plenty of names from the census sheets though although they wasn'tt mine still felt like I knew them. Pauline |
