This follows from a previous thread I posted about the surnames LEE & LUY. I have an ancestor called Thomas LEE. That is his surname on every census from 1851-1901. And also for his parents and brother. In 1851, 15yr old Thomas is at Toll End, Tipton with his mother Elizabeth and 13yr old brother William. Elizabeth was born c 1810 in Wellington, Shrops. The father, William, is absent from home, but later censuses state he was born c 1806 in Stourbridge. In 1841, there is a family called LUY at Toll End, Tipton made up of Willa, Elizh (both b c 1816), James (1831), Thomas (1837) and Willa (1838). Also in the house is 20yr old Richard Mansell. I am fairly confident that the families in 1841 & 1851 are the same. In 1832 William LAY married Elizabeth Mansell. Today I have received the birth cert for their son William LAY in 1838, in Tipton. Now my Problem - what surname do I now look for to continue looking for William - LEE, LUY or LAY or even LEES. Thank you for looking Helen

Probably all of them! Try saying LEE with a midlands accent and it becomes LAY. It depends on how the person writing it down heard it I guess. Anne
