Birth Cert for Someone Born in india

Hi I'm very new to this so I apologise if I am posting to the wrong place ;-) My maternal grandmother was born in India in 1903 to a military family (I think). I'd like a copy of her birth certificate. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Thanks

Um, don't take this as gospel, but it might be in the GRO overseas births indexes. There are also records at the India Office collection in the British Library. nell

I believe 1837 online have Army BMDs bit I am not sure if they are complete as I cannot find 2 rellies on there Good Luck

If you're lucky, it will be in the GRO consular indexes (try the Army returns first if you think his/her parents were in the UK armed forces). Unlike the main GRO indexes though they are not available on Ancestry, but can be looked at at 1837online if you purchase a few credits. Once you have the necessary details, you can order a certificate in the normal way from the GRO website, ticking the box for 'overseas events' and the fee is the same as a normal cert - £7. They contain slightly different info to a standard certificate, and on mine at least, neglects to include the mother's maiden name, though it did make up for it by including a date of baptism as well as a date of birth! If you are unlucky, you will probably need to contact the British Library in London who keep all the records pertaining to India up until independence from the UK in about 1948, as these are kept seperate from the GRO birth indexes. AFAIK these records are not indexed anywhere online, and applying for them is somewhat more complex and expensive, especially if you can't visit the BL in person. The birth certificate, if it is to be found anywhere, will be in one of these two places.

Thanks for tip re British Library/ India Office, as I have failed to find greatgrandfather on any of the Overseas records, although I know he was born in army family in India according to a later census.
