LIVING WILL I, __________________________, being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means. Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of pinhead politicians who couldn't pass ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on it, or lawyers / doctors interested in simply running up the bills. If a reasonable amount of time passes and I fail to ask for at least one of the following: ______ Glass of wine ______ Margarita ______ Martini ______ Cold Beer ______ Chicken fried steak and cream gravy ______ Mexican food ______ French fries ______ Pizza ______ Bowl of ice cream ______ a cup of tea ______ Chocolate ________ Sex_______, It should be presumed that I won't ever get better. When such a determination is reached, I hereby instruct my appointed person and attending physicians to pull the plug, reel in the tubes and call it a day. That was just a sweetener because I need help. I have been told that the Irish records were destroyed but having looked on here, I dont think so. My in-laws were double barrelled so that does not help but I am trying to find out about James Martin (or Martin-Flaven) circa 1831 Ireland. I think he was married to Harriett Mills 1844 Walsall and one of the children was Maurice Martin and another Leo Martin born Bishop Auckland 1878 I wondered if anyone could do a look-up for me. The family names following on are Maurice and Leo so am sure James is correct, not sure where they wed, even had Bath mentioned and the name Demery. Only just found this and also wondered what you all mean by 'nudge' Thank you all anyway Wendy

If I recall correctly, *some* Irish records were destroyed, but it's a long way from all the Irish records. I found something the other day about it... I'll just go have a look... Gordon

This isn't the quote I found about the Irish records, but it's similar... 'A popular misconception about researching Irish ancestors is that it is a fruitless exercise because so many records were destroyed. There is no denying that the loss of so many records in the destruction of the Public Record Office, Dublin, in 1922 was a catastrophe as far as historical and genealogical research is concerned. However, since 1922 the work of archivists to gather records of historical importance has resulted in a vast amount of material being available for the genealogical researcher to peruse. In addition there are other repositories in Ireland where the collections have survived virtually intact, as well as categories of records now available that were not in the Public Record Office in 1922 and so escaped destruction.' - From the Ulster Historical Foundations Website Hope this is some help Gordon

Wendy, assuming that James and Harriett got married in England then I would say your best bet to start with is to get their marriage certificate, as it should tell you the name and occupation of James's father. I bet there were loads of James Martins from Ireland! Also, if you can find the family on any English censuses then it may possibly give you more information on whereabouts in Ireland James was born, but of course it may well just say 'Ireland'. Kate.

If you aren't sure whether James's wife was Harriett Mills or not, then you could get Leo's birth certificate to confirm her name: Births Jun 1878 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Martin Leo Auckland 10a 209 Oh, and I presume that this is the family from the 1881 census of England (free on FamilySearch at www.familysearch.org): Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability James MARTIN Head M Male 50 Ireland Shoemaker Harriett MARTIN Wife M Female 38 Walsall, Stafford, England Frank MARTIN Son Male 14 N Stockton, Durham, England Paul MARTIN Son Male 12 N Stockton, Durham, England Maurice MARTIN Son Male 11 N Stockton, Durham, England Lily MARTIN Dau Female 8 N Stockton, Durham, England (Sch) Mary MARTIN Dau Female 6 N Stockton, Durham, England (Sch) Elizabeth MARTIN Dau Female 4 N Stockton, Durham, England Leo. MARTIN Son Male 2 Bp Auckland, Durham, England So they had quite a few children as well as Maurice and Leo! Kate.

By the way, 'nudge' is just adding a reply to a thread to make it go to the top of the message board. And if I were you, I would delete the funny bit of your initial posting so people can easily see what you are asking for help with. GR remove any formatting from the initial posting for some reason, so it really is difficult to read at the best of times! Kate.

Wendy your dates dont add up for James & Harriet's marriage, If James was born about 1831 & married in 1844 he would have only been 13 years old??? Georgina.

I think 1844 is supposed to be Harriett's year of birth, not her marriage! On the 1881 census she is 38, so she would have been born about 1842-3. Kate.
