I think the 'Who do you Think you Are' versions are equivalent to FTM 2005. Still worth buying - not a lot of difference between the 2005 and 2006 versions.

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 8 Aug 2006 11:37

WDYTYA versions are FTM 2005. The main difference between 2005 and 2006 is to do with web search results,2005 can't handle a badly mistranscribed census result,2006 is more tolerant. I never bother with the web results anyway, they don't quote census ref numbers, just a source (Ancestry). You end up with a page of references to Ancestry which is pretty much meaningless, better to c&p the results/household to the notes section for each person. As for births/marriages and deaths again it won't quote volume and page numbers,so i add those manually within the notes section. Glen

Me again !! Rechecked TWR site and if you haven´t got a subscription to Ancestry then the deluxe version looks quite good value. Cost 56 pounds. Contains Family Tree Maker 2006 UK Edition program, the Charting Companion program, three UK data CDs, (probably not a lot of use!!!) The Official Guide To Family Tree Maker 2006 book, (very useful if you haven´t used the programme before) Family Tree Maker 2006 Basics training DVD, (don´t know how useful this is!!) a free 180 day UK+Ireland Ancestry.co.uk subscription, (worth about 35 pounds) and a free 15 minute freephone telephone session with an Ancestry genealogist. (wow !!!)

Just checked TWR site - basic price is now 26.45 pounds - but still good value.

Hi Rose, I have used FTM for some years now and have recently upgraded to 2006. Its a very versatile programme and very easy to use. The basic price is about 24 pounds but there are other options available. There is a deluxe version which comes bundled with data discs - personally I would not recommend these as there is usually very little (if any) information of any help. (See my message below - change of thought here!!!) There are also versions available which come with free ancestry subscriptions (anything from 14 - 90 days). If you don´t have an Ancestry subscription then this is certainly worth considering. (A year´s subscription to ancestry costs 70 pounds) Have a look on TWR Computing website - some of the options are explained there - their prices are good and their service is excellent. http://www.twrcomputing(.)co(.)uk/

Having googled FTM it seems that you can get differing programs at different prices. Now, I haven't got any family tree software at the moment; all my stuff is on paper in files, or listed on here (and I think I have put some on Ancestry too). FTM gets a lot of praise so can I have a show of hands please? I am thinking of putting it on my letter to Fa**er Chr***mas (too early to mention his name lol). Oh, and what price range is a good 'basic' prog to have? Elaine mentioned approx £24. Thanks all have a good day Rose
