HI I hope someone can help me and tell me what i have done wrong. i had my tree and ftm2005 and have over 400 names i have a copy saved in my documents and i also have most of it on here. i got an email from someone in new zealand and it seemded we had a connection . so he sent me a gedcom file . i downloaded it and opened it and it was ftm2005 i looked thought it and then closed it down and tried to open my ftm2005 but it opened on the file from nz. not my own. so i have deleted the nz files and now back on my own. how can i view this other gedcom file without it taking over my ftm ? i am a bit of a numpty when it comes to competers so if you could keep it simple i would appreciate it love linda x |

hiya, firstly dont panic, just mail whoever it is and ask them to send you a genealogy report instead, it will be in a PDF format, then you can print that off instead HTH Julie |

Hi Lindy Not quite rhe answer you want, but details of how to save the file separate to your FTM till it's sorted where you want it We've got answers Get answers to the most frequently asked Family Tree Maker questions. Question How do I open in Family Tree Maker a file that was sent to me by e-mail? Answer Keep in mind that you can open these types of files into Family Tree Maker: *.FTM (a Family Tree Maker for DOS family file) *.FTW (a Family Tree Maker for Windows family file) *.FBC (a Family Tree Maker for Windows compressed backup file) *.FBK (a Family Tree Maker for Windows backup file) *.GED (a GEDCOM file) *.DAT (PAF 2.x) *.PAF (PAF 3.0) *.AFT (Ancestry Family Tree - FTM 2005 and later only) Usually when someone sends you a file by e-mail, the file is attached to the e-mail message. You must first save that file to the location of your choosing on your hard disk drive. If you are being sent a GEDCOM file, sometimes it can end up being made a part of the actual e-mail message instead of an attachment to the message. It should be easy to spot this because you should see something that starts: 0 HEAD followed by a lot of other numbered lines. if you see this you should highlight and copy everything from the 0 HEAD line through the 0 TRLR line. Copy this information, open Notepad and paste this information. Then in Notepad choose to save the file, naming it 'Something.ged' where Something is the name you want to give the file. Also, in this case, you do want to use the quote marks in the file name box in Notepad. Choose to save this file to a folder on your hard drive (such as the My Documents folder). Once you have saved the file to your hard drive, you now simply need to start Family Tree Maker and use its Open command to open the appropriate file from the spot where you chose to save it. Note: To open a FTW, FBC, or FBK file, you must be using the same or newer version than the person who sent you the file. If the sender uses a more current version than you do, have them use the Export File (in FTM 2005/2006) or Copy/Export (in FTM 11-earlier) command in Family Tree Maker to create a copy of the file in the version of Family Tree Maker that you use. Your file will still be there, you can open any number of gedcom files in FTM. I have about 5 on the go at the moment, I can open or close whichever one I want. Just close the one you don't want and go to file...open and browse to the correct file. Sam x |
