I have b.c. for my 2 x gt grandmother (Clara Littlewood) stating mother's name as Rebecca Littlewood, formerly TYAS. Have the family on 1861 and have found Rebecca with husband Joseph & 3 earlier children on 1851. Rebecca born about 1820, Joseph about 1817. Cannot find a marriage for them - but could have been married before Sept 1837. Cannot find anything on IGI - can find loads of possibles for Joseph but nothing for Rebecca. Cannot find them on 1841 - possibilities for Joseph, nothing for Rebecca either under TYAS or LITTLEWOOD. Sooooooooooooooo Where do I go from here???????????? Any help gratefully received! Sue

Thanks Christine - was just about to do that! yes all children born in Sheffield. Believe I can take Joseph back another generation from IGI, but I cannot find Rebecca. Have look through BMD on Ancestry from 1837 to 1853 for their marriage - do realise they may never have married though! Thanks again Sue

Yes - seen that but all subsequent census show Joseph as being born in Sheffield. I think they are sister & brother - just gut instinct - no proof. Also 1851 shows my Joseph in Sheffield with Rebecca, and that Joseph in Almondbury, with Mary! You see my problem? Sue

1841 doesn;t have where born, it just has whether or not born in county.

Tried looking for the birth registrations of the children shown on 1851 Census and this is the only Frank. Births Jun 1849 Littlewood Frank Huddersfield 22 403 Unfortunately the names John and Elizabeth are too common to be sure.

Thanks but the Almondbury, Huddersfield one is not correct. As I have said My family are in Sheffield in 1851 and they are still in Almondbury in 1851 - it is definitely the wrong family. But thank you for trying! Sue

Sue, have you seen this? May just be a coincidence but Tyas is quite an unusual name.................. Marriages Dec 1842 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ashton Matilda Rotherham 22 373 Hague Jonathan Rotherham 22 373 Ibbotson Ann Rotherham 22 373 LITTLEWOOD JOSEPH Rotherham 22 373 Nicholson John Rotherham 22 373 Platts John Booth Rotherham 22 373 Pyburn Harri[eo]t Rotherham 22 373 TYAS ELIZABETH Rotherham 22 373

Yes seen that too - but there is nothing to match on the 1851 census. It is a possibility that she was named Elizabeth Rebecca but both names usually show on the marriage records don't they? Could try matching her up with the others and see if they turn up on the 1851 I suppose! Sue

Hi A very very nice man went to Doncaster Archives today to try & find my Rebecca. He found this entry in to Index for Parish Registers referring to the Poor Law (hope I have got that all right!) Arksey (4-5 miles from Hickleton) Nov 20 1823: Rebecca Tyas to have 6d per week taken off & William Tyas to have 1s a week put on. The lady at the archives said Rebecca & Wm must have been young children (Yes hurray) or very old (hope not) to have this Poor Relief. In 1823 my Rebecca would have been 3yrs old. It isn't much but it is a brick out of the wall don't you think? Going to Sheff Archives next week to try & find that illusive marriage! Wish me luck! Sue
