GR Family Tree Builder problems

Is it just me, or have other users been experiencing difficulties? I have problems clicking on certain members of my family, the little cup of tea times out! What's more, it seems to be mainly with people called John! Surely he can't know I'm looking at him from up there! Mandy

Hi Mandy Its not just you. I've only just managed to get my tree to open - i've been trying all day. And yes - the speed is somewhere between slow and stop! Barbara

I'm generally having no problems, it just seems with specific members of the family, the time-out is the only way! I'm glad it's not just me though!

The time-out problem's been happening to me occasionally, and I've now found a workaround solution - don't know why it works, though. Go to Immediate Family (in the left-hand margin of this page), and click on the various names till you get to the one you're having trouble with. Click on Edit. Check to see there are no obvious problems (e.g. marriage date entered under Place), and click on Save Changes, even if you haven't made any changes.

Thanks Mary...that does work! I'll bear that in mind. I would never have thought of doing it!

I found it through sheer desperation. I couldn't go any further with one line of my family because the last person's name kept timing out, and even the GR support people never sorted it, despite a couple of e-mails. I tried everything I could think of pretty much at random, and finally discovered I could edit that name through Immediate Family. There was actually a problem (marriage date in the place box), and when I fixed that, it didn't time out again. Since then, I've been using the same system to fix time-outs, although none of the others have had any obvious problems in them.

I think I'll check all my details carefully then. I tend to climb through the generations on my tree to find specific people, rather than the locate facility. Silly, I know, but it helps me to get a feel of who's who since it's been growing so big! The problem with this is, that the person who's been timing out is my dad...so I can't use this system anymore on his side, as I never get beyond myself! He so knows his name is in lights!

Other things that GR support told me might cause timing out are very long notes, and punctuation in the place of birth field.

That shouldn't be a problem in this case. I've now got my dad moving, but still can't edit a relative who's way back in time. I can't even delete him to start again with him as he's attached to wife and children. Grrr

If you're really stuck, export your tree to a family tree program, fix the problem and re-import it. If you don't have one, you can download PAF5 for free from the familysearch.org site.

We haven't been able to veiw one particular person on our tree GR said they hoped to fix it by today. Now I think about it that one does have more notes than any other.

Hi I have not been able to use my tree at all as of the 4th. I have just put a message on the board ---scrolled down to see your message, I'm not the only one with a problem it makes me feel better, now I am concerned that I will loose all the hard work I have done over the last few months. Sheila
