I see what you mean. I'm fairly confident now that I have chosen the correct 'James Moon' as his area of registration for birth and death was Basford, having lived in Mapperley, between Shipley and Ilkeston in the Basford registration area. I'll send off for the certificate to confirm. Thanks Glen. |

Based on the districts anything around 1865/70 will be under the GRO volume 7b,which as you can see covers quite a few parish entries as well as different counties. Glen |

Brilliant Glen, thanks a lot! I've now done a google for Basford and got the rest of the information. I live in the area, but it's always really strange when the places are all in different registration districts years ago! |

Many thanks Glen...that came as a bit of a shock really! Imagine marrying at 12/14! |

The age of consent was 12 for girls and 14 for boys, those aged under 21 were supposed to marry 'under licence' (with parental consent) Glen |

I'm trying to second guess here, so I apologise to those who think I'm clutching at straws! I have two questions 1) In 1869, do you think it was more likely for a man to have married aged 24 or 19? Was there an age of consent like we have today and what was it? (I do realise they didn't always tell the truth!) 2) I have done a lot of research, but still have no clear idea of where the Shardlow/Belper/Basford areas start and end. Does anyone know? Many thanks |
