Hi, I'd be really grateful if anyone could give me some tips on how to find out about an adoption/find an original birth certificate. All I have in the way of information is a birth date, and the birth mother's name. I'm not really sure where to look so any pointers would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

Hi Joni Would the adoptee be you? by any chance? You have the mothers name, so you could do a look up on www.1837online* com(replace * with .) for the birth date under her surname. You need to contact your Social Services Dept. They will point you in the right direction, with details of your birth name etc. Also Have a look at the GRO web site for adoptions http://www.gro.gov*uk/gro/content/ (replace * with .) Regards Ann x |

Thanks for the replies :o) I'm not the adoptee, no. It's my father-in-law that I'm looking for. They'd like to know more about his adoption because they feel it was a bit muddled, possibly not quite legitimate. I know his birth date, the area he was born in and I know his birth mother's name (not her maiden name though). I've tried looking at a couple of BMDs but I think I'm just not very good at it! I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. We'd like a copy of the original birth certificate, but without going through an agency as we're not even sure one was involved! |

Hi Joni I've copied a pasted this from the GRO website: ***How do I find my original birth details? If you were adopted through a court in England or Wales and are aged 18 years or over you can apply for a certificate of your original birth entry and try to seek out more information about your origins. Firstly, read our background information before 1975 or after 1975 relating to when you were adopted. Then apply for the Access to Birth Records service. Find out what is involved at each stage: what will happen at the interview with the adoptions advisor and how to find your adoption file. If you were born in England or Wales but adopted in Scotland, Ireland or overseas you will need to contact the General Register Office for that country in order to access your birth records*** Go to http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/adoptions/ It will tell you excaltly how to apply. Hope this helps. Cheers Gerry |
