Might be a silly question but how big should you make a FTM file? I making one for my side and one for my husbands but they will each end up quite large. So far on my husband's side I've entered 800 and the file size is 1045kb but I'm not even half way there yet. And once I start on mine I've got thousands to enter. |

I've asked my son, as I'm not technical at all. He says the file will just keep increasing in size as you add to your tree. However the current size you mention is approximately only 1/700th of what you can fit on one CD Rom. Kath. x |

Maybe my 2000 was a bit low!(still think it relates to max number shown in a tree though) C&P from the online help centre Question Is there a limit to the total number of individuals that I can add to a Family Tree Maker file? Answer Yes, there is a limit on the total number of individuals that can be entered in the program. You can enter about 250,000 people in your file, depending on several factors including the amount and type of data stored for each person. We have seen actual numbers vary from about 205,000 to 300,000 or more. For many people, system resources become a limiting factor before their file ever reaches 200,000 people. The larger your file gets, the more processing power, memory (RAM/virtual memory) and storage it requires. A large file will sometimes use up your computer's processing, memory, and storage long before you reach 200,000 individuals. Glen |

Wow thanks Glen, I don't think I'm likely to reach that amount. I've had FTM for a year but haven't really used it much. Now we've got our new putter I'm busy entering all my info on it, and finding my way around it. Josie |

I've got nearly 3000 in my FTM tree and it's not showing any signs of strain. Not all my own work, before anybody asks. Mostly documenting the quill pen and typewriter efforts of those gone before. J |

FTM is pretty good, I have 6 separate trees in my FTM, trees rangeing from 2000 to over 5000 names and no problems. IF your PC is old and not much ram, just reboot every now and again to restore your ram and you should have no problems. Jan |
