Hi i have just been looking on the census and have noticed living with the family is a Clara Cleesham and relationship to head of the house is Child at nurse. It's on the 1881 census ref RG11/2347 folio 49 page 30 she is living with a James Vivian. Also could anybody see if they could find James Vivian on the 1851 census as i am struggling to trace him on this one. Many thanks Jen Sorry i have changed the date i pressed the wrong key

I think a child at nurse was a child being cared for by a woman who had breast milk (no formula feeds in those days) when the mother hadn't or couldn't breast feed, most commonly too weakened by the birth to breast feed (or recommended not to by doctor for her health). Richer families I believe would bring the woman into their household while she was nursing the child. Mavis

Hi Glen sorry i didn't know how else to get your attention without posting you name. The census that i have posted is the one for 1851. Thanks Mavis this would also make sense i have heard of people that do that but i thought they were called wet nurses but maybe that is more of a up to date term for it. Thanks Jen

I doubt if a two year old would still be being breat fed. The standard meaning of Nurse Child, or Child at Nurse, is what we would call a Foster Child today. Wet nurses didnt GENERALLY take babies into their homes, but nipped up 'the big house' five or six times a day! OC

Nurse child wasn't just C19. I'd guess they wouldn't have been referred to as such, but my mother always talked of feeding someone else's twins in the hospital when I was born because she had plenty of milk and the twins' mother couldn't/wouldn't feed them herself, and they needed human milk if possible. Christine PS - I wasn't born in the C19!

I've just goggled child at nurse, in workhouse records, it seems to be a child who the workhouse is responsible for but who is being looked after by someone outside the workhouse. But on the Proceedings of the Old Bailey (fascinating I nearly didn't come back!) it appears to be a child being nursed by someone who wasn't it's mother, but where the mother is going there to visit. My 1892 dictionary gives wet nurse - someone who sucklesa child not her own, with no suggestion as location, ie. in their house, or the child's. Don't know if that makes us any the wiser really. I knew someone who was still breast feeding her child when he was toddling, don't know historically when people felt it should be stopped. Back to google!! Mavis
