Thank u all so very much xxxxxxxxxxxxx i really appreciate your help and advice xxxxxxxx sorry its taken me so long to reply had visitors on and off all day including a shock but wonderfull visit from my new cousin :))))))))))) All I know is that Ethel Dodd was my nannas mum :( I havnt got a clue how old she was when she had nan or where she came from (I never met my nan as dad was adopted at 6yrs and nan died in 1998 before i got a chance to find her :( so cant ask her and she never told my uncles anything about her past at all very secretative) I know that in 1912 Ethel Dodd was living at Rose Street in Nottingham and that she was a domestic cook (as thats what it says on my nans birth cert) no fathers name was on either nans birth or marriage cert. I have done a search on the BMD's for any possible marriages for Ethel Dodd and found maybe 1 possible in 1917 in Mansfield. But how do I know what Ethel is the right one (headaches back big time lol) I have also done a search on births for Ethel but there are hundreds of Ethel Dodd not knowing where she came from or her age isnt helping matters :( I have tried to search for a christening baptism for my nan and nothing is showing for either, something told me that Ethel was only young when she had Frances Mabel Dodd (my nan) and somethings also telling me that the man she worked for may have been nans father (dont know whats telling me that but just have a strong feeling about it) also have a very strong feeling Ethel was only around 17 yrs when she gave birth (im prob totally wrong about that but something keeps telling me thats so) Back to the BMD's lol too late now for visitors so can search to my hearts content Luv Angie xxxxxxxx

hiya, firstly i would begin with gran, you have her birth cert, do you have her marriage cert?? or death cert? how old was her mum when she had her? I see that you have possibles on census, have you looked for a baptism for gran, possibly father named on it, did your gran have any other names? Julie

This could be Rebecca and James in 1851 with more members of the Dodd family. Ethel Dodd is not a very common name but I think a marriage certificate would only prove that Ethel on the census got married not that she was your nan's mum. ON the i891 census Rebecca is described as a siter. I think this is her in 1871 with possibly their mother. Still no man about the place. Angela at some stage Ethel may have married, if you trawl through the marriages on Ancestry you may find an entry & her marriage certificate will tell you her fathers name (lets hope she wasn't Illigitimate as well) Georgina.

How do you find out about someone when you have so little information to go on. My Nanna was bornb out of wedlock I think. Her name was Francis Mabel Dodd b 31 oct 1912. On her birth cert it says she was born at Rose street nottingham. Her mums details were as follows. Ethel Dodd occupation Domestic servant (cook) Adress Rose street Nottingham. Its my great nanna im now interested in finding out more. I have no idea where she was from or age how would I go about finding out this info?
