Can anyone tell me what info can be obtained by using the NBI? Am looking for a death (dated not known but after 1940) Have searched Ancestry BMD 1940 to 1983 unsuccessfully!!! Does the NBI give the GRO details, assuming that the death can be found that is! Thanks in advance for any replies received. Lesley

Lesley The NBI is the National Burial Index. There is very little for the dates you mention, mostly 19th century. Doesn't give GRO numbers. It is a transcription of the burial registers for some not all parishes. Margaret

Just gives name age date of death and place I think. I had problems finding my aunts death as I was disregarding any that werent in her home county, and it wasnt until a year or so after that her sister/aunt told me that she had moved to a nursing home a year before she had died and I was looking in the wrong place all that time!

Lesley Who are you looking for and where? When were they born and when was the last time you found them?

Thanks Willow the Wisp. The lady I am looking for, I assumed died in a Mental Hospital. She was disowned by the family although I can remember being taken to see her in the early 1940's. It is possible she was moved on. Although I have searched Ancestry BMD and cannot find her at all anywhere. Thanks for your help anyway. Lesley

Lesley Report 6 Aug 2006 15:32

Margaret. The lady is my Grandmothers sister. I have her birth Cert, she was B.23-02-1894 in Gosport Hants. Her name was Evelyn Cleverley(or maybe Cleverly).I know she was alive in the early 1940's as I was taken to visit her by my Grandmother. She was a patient in Knowle Mental Hospital. in Fareham Hants. The Hospital site is now a Housing Estate!! Lesley.

Lesley Nothing on the NBI. Why have you stopped searching the GRO indexes at 1983?

Margaret

Margaret Report 6 Aug 2006 15:35

Lesley Is this her? The date of birth is a bit out. Name: Evelyn Cleverly Birth Date: 5 Dec 1897 Death Registration Month/Year: Mar 1991 Age at death (estimated): 93 Registration District: South East Hampshire Inferred County: Hampshire Volume: 20 Page: 1864

Margaret. Do they go further than 1983? That would make Evelyn 89!!! Surely she wouldn't have lived for that long in an instituion! Lesley

Lesley That perhaps isnt her. The only thing I can suggest that you search the indexes again and dont dismiss a registration district at all. Check the birth date is hers(after 1969) Or the age at death could be her. I thought a reg dis couldnt be one of mine once as it was a different county, but she died in hospital in the next county. It was the correct one. Have more of an open mind.

Margaret. I did see that one but was put off by the date of birth being wrong. I suppose the only way to find out is to send for the certificate. The name and district are correct so it is a possibility I suppose. I will send for the certificate and at least I will know one way or the other. Have never received a wrong one yet but this may be a first!!!! Thanks for your help Lesley
