What is is that you want to do? Gedcom is just the type of file that family trees are saved as. for example, if you export your tree off this site, GR will email it to you as a Gedcom file. You can then import this gedcom into other family history applications. Sam x

Have you got your tree anywhere else, like on this site or on a family history program? If you have, you can export the file and this will give you a gedcom file. You can then import that gedcom file to Ancestry and it will put your tree on there and save you having to type in each person individually. To export from this site, there is a link on the left hand side of here that says 'Import/Export Tree'. if you go there and then chose the export option, GR will email you your tree as a gedcom file. Then you need to save this onto your computer somewhere (I usually put mine on the desktop so I can see it). Then go into Ancestry Tree Maker and there should be an option to Import, chose this and browse to where you saved the gedcom file and it will put your tree on Ancestry. Sam x

Think of Gedcom as a suitcase in which you pack up your tree from a site (hotel) and transport it to another site (another hotel or house). You need a genealogy software package to 'read' the Gedcom, its just a way of moving data from one package to another. nell
