John, that's really interesting. I've tried the current maps and found most of the places but not together. And the old parish maps seem to have them all over the place. But you mentioned Sawrey. That was Agatha Kirkby's maiden name. |

My trusty Lake District Tourist Map (1963, cloth bound, 10 shillings!) shows the following: The village of Coniston is at the north end of Coniston Water. Going east on the way to Hawkshead you pass Thwaite Cottage and then Monk Coniston. It's likely they are both farms or parts of farms. If you carry on along that road you get into Beatrix Potter country (Sawrey) and then to the car ferry across Windermere to Bowness. A lot of my rellies came from that area. Most of the Lake District 'fells' don't have a suffix. There are odd ones such as Scafell Pike but they are the exception. This area was in Lancashire but is now in Cumbria. The Lancashire BMD site has an excellent map and description. This area is in the Ulverston registration district. J |

You can get an impression of where it is by using Multimap... http://www.multimap.*com/ (remove *) I can't see anything other than an actual mountain called Mount Coniston, but there is a place called Monk Coniston between Coniston and Hawkshead. The 1:25,000 scale gives a good level of detail once you've got the broader picture from 1:100,000 - I looked for Hawkshead first. Christine |

As the address is part of Coniston, I would say 'yes'. If you google Coniston you should find some connections. Happy hunting. Patricia |

Hi Hawkshead is in the Lake District so try Cumbria/Cumberland/Westmorland, depending on dates you're looking for. Good luck. Patricia |

I have googled this and used Genuki, but can't find exactly where this place is. I have a will dated 1815 from my Agatha Kirkby. Her address is: Thwaite, Mount Coniston, Hawkshead, County of Lancaster. I've found all the places, but the address is written as if they are the same place. Like Brisbane, Quuensland, Australia sort of thing. Any ideas?? |
