Can anyone tell me how I go about searching parish records. I'm trying to find a marriage probably in the parish of Aston, in Birmingham.

1st stop online is www.familysearch.org which is free. Use the Hugh Wallis batch numbers (google to get addy) which has an alphabetical list by county of towns/parishes covered by the IGI [International Genealogical Index]. You can then click on a batch number and put in the surname to search. If its not there, check the databases - again listed by county - on the payperview www.familyhistoryonline*com. Replace * with . to use. If the area and period you want are covered you can search to see if there are any entries, and then buy units £5 minimum to see full details. If not on either of these, parish registers are at the relevant county records offices. Local family history societies may have transcripts and may offer searches - most have websites with details. Alternatively you can order microfilm of various registers at your nearest LDS family history centre - details on the www.familysearch.org site. nell

I agree with Neil use the igi ad other online sources but then you need to get to view the entries yourself. You need to see the image. There are mistakes and in some cases very wild guesses in a lot of the information on the IGI. I have seen whole trees on there containing numerous errors.
