Just had an email contact through ancestry - firstly, I didn't know you could do this and secondly how does the contact know that I'm related to the person they've contacted me about? I definitely don'thave a tree on there. Very bemused by it all. Zoe. xx

Zoe, I BELIEVE Ancestry has access to records. A contact of mine only placed his information on RootsWeb and it shows on Ancestry!

I think ancestry keeps records of all the look-ups you do. If you enter someone's name you can find a message contact people interested in Fred Bloggs and it will list people who have looked up Fred on a census as well as anyone who has them on their tree or added them to people they are looking for.

I've opted out of the part where people can contact me based on what I've looked up because I do so many look-ups for other people I can''t understand how they're searching for an Olive M Fenton and they come up with me as a contact - I'm not looking for her on any boards at all. *sigh* Zoe

Ancestry definitely has links to Rootsweb - my brother put our tree on there (Rootsweb) and it appeared on Ancestry. OC
