Thanks again everyone for your replies. Hannah and the children seem to have lived with her mother until she died. It was Caroline who registered the death. Why Horace wasn't there I can't work out - unless he was at a sleepover. I've just double checked the 1881 census on Ancestry for Caroline - she's there, with son John Fox & grdaur Laura Clarke. The wonderful new parent/spouse relationship thing of Ancestry's has decided that John FOX is Laura CLARKE's father!!!! Helen

What was Horace's mothers maiden name? Sorry. was Fox, no help there then. That's what I thought Julie. Horace G Slater, defo is Slater on the Image. Not only is there no birth registered for Horace Slater he is not listed on 1891 census either, it's as if he doesn't exist. This info coupled with the fact his sister is boarded out too suggests this is the one BUT how Slater can be confused with Clark? Only I suggest if it had been Written on the form by the Head of H/hold and not spoken aloud to the enumerator. Then it is copied from the sheets into a book by someone else so easy peasy to make an error. Kat

Thnaks for your replies. His father is Samuel Clark. Sam & Horace are boarding in Tipton in 1891 - Sam is still there in 1901. Horace is in Sheffield in 1901. Caroline and Laura are still together in 1891. She is the maternal grandmother. In 1871, Caroline has her daughter (Sam's wife), Hannah Clark and grand-daughter Catharine with her. Hannah died in 1880. Sam is not with the family. He is hard to keep track of. On the 1891 census, his birth place is given as Stourbridge, in 1901, it is Tipton and in 1871 (I eventually found him) as Mount Pleasant, transcribed as Monut Regnant. His birth cert of 1843 says Quarry Bank. Clark can be with or without an 'e'. I can't connect the Moore family to either the Clarks or the Foxes, and there is no Mary Ann in either family who could have married in to it. Thanks again Helen

I don't think there is any possible way you can tell unfortunately, Helen. Maybe the grandma couldn't take him in as well so boarded him with another rellie or a friend. they could I suppose have named him by mistake with their surname on the census. Have you traced the people he was living with backwards? they maybe rellies. Kat

My Gr-grandfather Horace George Victor Clark was born in Goscote, Walsall in 1877...... I have been unable to find him on the 1881 census...... His mother is dead, his father is also missing, and his sister, Laura, is with their grandmother Caroline Fox...... I have found a 3yr old Horace G. Slater, born Goscote, boarding with a family in Goscote - could it be him...... There are no births for a Horace Slater in Staffs at that time..... In 1891 he is back with his father. Thanks Helen
