Hi, I have found a passenger list for a ship to Australia in the 1860s. I believe one of my relations is on the list. The surname is there, but instead of a first name, it says jno. There are a number of entries on the list with this 'Jno.' Anyone know what is means? Thanks. |

It is undoubtedly an abbreviation for Jonothan, which itself is spelled many ways and is often shortened to John. |

Matthew I think it's abbreviated to mean Jonathan/Jonathon. Like Jn for John Wm for William Thos for Thomas etc. Someone else will probably point you in the right direction for a webpage with the commonly used ones. I have seen them listed somewhere but I can't remember now Michelle |

Thanks for that. My initial thoughts were that it was short for Jonathan, but there were so many Jno. 's on there, I assumed it must mean something else. Oh well, not my ancestor. Cheers, Matt |

Sorry but the standard abbreviations are Jno = John Jono, Jona, etc = Jonathon. This all depends on the person writing the name KNOWING the correct abbreviations, of course. OC |
