Hi Everyone xxxx Can someone explain what this means pls as im confused (just for a change!) On the 1861 Census I have my 3x great grandad Eli Binch but it says there are two daughters there named Selby!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hows that? im confused. as follows civil parish Lenton St Paul Nottingham sub district Hyson Green Eli Binch aged 61 b 1800 Calverton Head wife Sarah Sarah Binch aged 59 b 1802 Nottingham Wife Mary Binch 25 b 1836 Nottingham Daughter in Law Walter Binch 24 b 1837 Ilkeston Derbyshire Son Fathers name Eli Mothers name Sarah Sarah Selby aged 20 b 1841 Nottingham Daughter Fathers name Eli Mothers name Sarah Susannah Selby aged 27 b 1834 Nottingham Daughter Fathers name Eli mothers name Sarah. Now thats what I cant understand who are these last 2 girls? Eli & Sarah had 2 other boys (that arnt on this census as they had left home) David Binch b 1830 mothers name Sarah fathers name Eli & Elizabeth Binch b 1831 Mothers name Sarah Fathers name Eli. Any suggestions very much appreciated cus this is wrecking my head trying to figure it out. Luv Angie xxxxxxxxx |

Could the mother Sarah have been married before and these were children from the first marriage. I know it seems unlikely as the son born in between these two girls is called Binch. I wonder if they should have been down as boarders and 'daughter' has been written down by mistake. Have you found them in an earlier census? Kath. x |

Census transcripts aren't always 100%, meaning the two Selby girls could (possibly) be his neices etc. Or even friends daughters, staying with the family. Or adopted? Or born to the mother out of wedlock, if her maiden name is Selby. May be their surname is Selby Binch, if they were named after the maternal side, or their fathers mum. |

I've had a look on the 1851 census and these two and some others are down as 'daughter-in-law' and 'son-in-law', but in this case it would seem that this means step-daughter and step-son as they are not old enough to be married. Hope this makes sense. Kath. x |

hiya, rite then, USUALLY when there are DIL, SIL, on census, it can mean 2 things, either they were children from a previous relationship, or in this case i would suspect, that they are 'adoptive' children, (ie parents died and they took them in), have you found mary ann selby on 41 cens? HTH Julie ohh, scratch that, found a possible family on 1841 cens, with a william as head, would fit nicely, with the eldest one being called william Julie |

Dear Angela I think DIL SIL at this time would mean stepchildren. It happens loads. If the spouse died especially when your children at home is was common to remarry. Both parties benefited Husband had someone to care and raise his children and Wife had someone to support her and her children. No state handouts of any kind, remember. I have found very few relatives that remained single after their partners death when children were involved. It was not so common to take unrelated children in. Often if one or both parents died they would go to Grandparents or siblings but I have always found them declared as such. Surnames and birth places are always swapped around between the siblings. I find the more accurate the closer to the event. So as you go back earlier the less likely time will have fuddled the brain You could list the children with father unknown for now as another spouse to Sarah I have one woman: two illeg children take her surname, then she marries and three more children, widowed another child remarries then five children. Some of these children have had all three surnames at different times through the census. Confusing eh! Michelle |
