Help ! Is there no other way to get the census?

I emailed Scotlands People as the image I requested online didnt match up with the order and this is their reply. Is there any other way to get the census ? Help please ! Thanks Robyn Thank you for your e-mail and many apologies for the problem you have experienced. Usually when a page is missing or linked wrongly we can either direct the customer to click 'view page after' or 'view page before', or send a copy by post . In this cases the entry has somehow been missed from the original scan. A header page with page 1 is accessible in view free header but Alexander Smith must be on page 2 of the image which should have been referenced 485 5 1 ( 2 pages being on an 1841 image, but indexed as first page). The header would not normally contain any household pages but only district info etc. In instances such as this we would normally go to the census book, take a copy from the actual page and send it to the customer, but I'm really sorry to say that we have been advised not to send unofficial paper copies of the 1841 and 1851 census partly for conservation purposes, and also because the images in some cases so badly faded that subjecting them to photocopying won't actually improve the entry at all. We will have some of the problematic entries re-scanned in the future but in the meantime we are refunding the customers credits . I have added 10 credits to your account. I'm really sorry for the disappointment on this occasion. Scotlands People New Register House Edinburgh EH1 3YT

Robyn I suspect the only way is to go to Edinburgh and ask to view the image in the book and copy out by hand the detail you want, unless you want to wait til they rescan it and enhance the image. but I guess that could be years. What a pig tho', hard luck Kat

Robyn, the 1841 scotlands census would appear to be on Ancestry. Can try for you if you want. JoJo

Thanks to you both Katarzyna and JoJo. Unfortunately I live in NZ so it would be a bit expensive unless of course I win Lotto ! Thanks JoJo if you could look it up on Ancestry just in case that would be good to cross off another option. All my rellies are being brickwalls at the moment I'm starting to get a wee bit despondent. Many thanks Robyn NZ
