Just to clarify Judith's response, in WW2 the American's didn't have an Air Force. The Army and the Navy had their own air forces, so the person you are seeking was more than likely at one of the many Bomber and Transport airbases set up in the Eastern counties. |

Do you mean he was in the US army? The 8th and 9th United States Army Air Force were based at loads of Essex airfields during WW2: Birch, Boreham, Boxted, Chipping Ongar, Earls Colne, Great Dunmow, Raydon, Rivenhall, Stansted Mountfitchet, Wethersfield, Wormingford to name a few. Some of these continued after the war. The last Americans, of the Red Horse Brigade, a heavy engineering unit, left Wethersfield in 1990. I think you would need to contact the USAF for records rather than the British Army. |
