HO107/2128 Folio 311 page 18 I'm looking at John Godfrey, age 79. I think the occupation says (something) of works department. Can anyone interpret for me please? Many thanks Barbara

Incapable of work. The Dep. was added later and means dependent. J

I think it says INCAPABLE OF WORK and the Dep has been added later when they have been classifying the jobs. Jim

It looks like Incs/rieye but I am guessing its a mistake and should say Inspector?

Beginning certainly could say 'incap-' and the blob at the end of work could be a fullstop. Makes sense, considering he isn't even head of household, so unlikely to be inspector. Mind you, I think the Dept could send the enumerator off for handwriting classes! nell

Thank you Helen and Looby. I'll go with the suggestion of 'Incapable' from Jim and John I think. Helen - I certainly agree about the handwriting classes. I'm glad its not just me can't read some of these images! Barbara
