Thanks everybody for your replies... thought I was going daft not being able to find a site. I am helping a friend who lives in the US find her mother's birth certificate... born in Ireland maybe (and I'm guessing here late 40's and 50's) I'll pass on your replies. Cheers Gerry

HI This is not a site but will help. If you live near an LDS Family History centre - they are able to order in the indexes for BDMs for specific years. If you are lucky they also have filmed some of the registers as well. Some of the early Births have been transcribed to the British Vital Records CD's also available from the LDS. These records have not been added to the IGI but are a different set of CD's altogether. KEEP IN MIND All Ireland was under one registration up to 1922. Note. Anybody is able to use the LDS facilities without questions about their own beliefs. The only costs incurred is for the postage from the Central repository to your local centre of any material not permantly held by your local centre and for photocopies. Hope this helps

Hi Geraldine, This is the nearest site I've found for searching Irish births and marriages. It only covers 11 counties so far. http://www*irishgenealogy*ie/csi/csi_main*cfm Liz

Sorry Gerry, hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you find any reliable online lrish birth indexes of any description...... free, pay with a piece of gold, or even sell your soul for payment types, then stand in line and wait your turn behind the rest of us. lol! It's very hard to find any lrish records that have been transcribed for online viewing.
