I think you are referring to the mormon practice of baptising ancestors after their deaths. This is the real reason for the LDS site, their members are encouraged to find all their ancestors and then submit them to be baptised into the church. It doesnt bother me, I dont believe in their religion and its handy that they have set up this free site for us all to use.

I have heard of this before, but what is the book of the dead?

Angela If you google 'Hugh Wallis batch numbers' you will find a useful site that will help you get the most out of your lds searches. You can choose a country, then a county and then look to see which parishes are on the LDS site on the IGI. It has C numbers for christenings and M numbers for marriages. You can see straightaway if parish records are on the LDS site or not. You can click on a batch number and then either look through the whole batch, or put in a surname to get all the entries on that batch that match. nell

I havnt really had that much luck on the LDS site (only found a couple of true rellies on there) Whats the book of death? sounds a bit ghoulish to me lol. The reason I wondered was that a member of my family who has a really unusual; name and was the only one born in Nottingham during a 20 yr or more period was on there and I wondered how he was on there? Also ya know on Ansetry the tree thingy, ive been adding (only proven rellies lol) to it and its giving me matches to my real rellies and the same unusual name came up again which is freaky as I wondered how they were related as it doesnt seem to say and gives no name as to who the tree belongs to how do I find out? Over the last 3 years I have cursed some of the LDS records. eg. people being married 50 yrs before having children or the same people being called different names ie Joseph Wilkes marrying someone also down as Joseph Weeks. However, having finaly managed to get the the record office and seeing the records in fact the LDS had it right. The people marrying 50 yrs out must have had children of the same name marrying people of the same name. The Joseph Wilkes /Weeks was because one was the bans in his home town and the other the marriage in hers. So some of the 'mistakes' are not mistakes after all. Though many are!! Jeanie A.

Information which is 'extracted' comes from original parish registers. Where I have been able, I have checked any of my rellies on this with the original registers. In one or two cases I have found errors like 18th for 8th etc. The original registers often have more info than is on the LDS site. Generally though, the info is fairly reliable. Information which is 'submitted' may or may not be accurate and may or may not give information about the submitter. I am always v. wary of things that say 'born abt 1852' when it is quite easy nowadays to check, or give 'Bedfordshire' as a birthplace instead of an exact town/village name. But in its defence, I will say that the LDS site - www.familysearch.org - is a fantastic FREE tool to help you trace your family, especially in the period before civil registration and censuses. Baptism and marriages after 1837 can often provide extra information to that on the GRO indexes. You can also do a blanket search for ALL children baptised to a pair of parents, which is great. Additionally, the LDS have a number of family history centres around the world. The one called Hyde Park, which is actually opposite the Science Museum in London, has a vast range of reference materials and parish registers etc on microfilm. I went there for a morning and was able to find all the baptisms, marriages and burials I wanted from 3 different Norfolk parishes. Nearer and less expensive than going to Norfolk Records Office AND its open all day on Saturday, whereas NRO closes at 12. nell

Yep, Ive had 7 year old giving birth on those submitted entries.

If you look at an entry it will either say 'submitted' which means it could be iffy as someone doing their tree has put in on there - or it will say 'extracted' - these are entries transcribed from the parish records.

Information is entered in LDS via relatives/transcribers and from the book of dead which I disapprove of completely, the BOD that is. Lin
