Great work Mog! I had tried forename only for Betsy and Betty, but hadn't thought of the spelling Betsey. Good thing I know from family that the surname was actually Jopson, cos they're spelled (mistranscribed) differently on almost every census, lol.

You're welcome Sarah! I searched by forename, county and year of birth. Tried Betsy and no joy so tried Betsey and then scrolled through the list until I came to a name that looked as though it was mistranscribed. Ispson just doesn't sound right. Quite often this is the easiest way to find the ones that are in hiding! Mog

Thank you Mog! That's brilliant. How on earth did you find that? I would never have found Ispson! I'll submit a correction to ancestry. It must be them, even though Betsy's place of birth is different. But Alice's place of birth is different on 1851 census too. 1851 gives Liverpool, while 1861 gives Newbrough, Lancashire (which I think must be Newburgh?). I see son Philip has disappeared by 1861, but son John has appeared. I'll have a look at BMDs and see if I can make more sense of that. Interesting that Pill family is living next door in 1861, because in 1871 census Daniel Jopson is brother-in-law to head of household Richard Pill. So, something else for me to investigate. :-) Thanks again Mog!

Thanks Sue! I think the fog lifts now and then! Mog in a light mist.

I think they must be mistranscribed, Ancestry's not even offering one Jopson for the 1861 census. Hopefully Mog has found them for you.......some fog you're in Mog, doesn't slow you down at all!

Sarah there's a Betsey Ispson indexed on the 1861 census in Everton, but when I had a look at the image it looks like Jopson to me, although it says she was born in Garston. She has children Daniel 32, Annie 22, John 15 and Elizabeth 11. Have a look and see what you think. They're in Portland Place - same as in 1851 and Betsey is a cowkeeper. Mog

Hi all, hope somebody can help me find a missing family: I’m looking for the Jopson family in the 1861 census for Liverpool (probably Everton or West Derby). I have them in 1841 and 1851, and have found some of them in 1871 but can’t find any of them in 1861. I think Philip died in 1851 as I have found a death index for Philip Jobson, W. Derby, Sep. 1851. Also a death index for Betsy Jopson, W. Derby, Dec. 1865. So she and the rest of the family must be somewhere in 1861! I have tried Jopson, Jepson, Japson, Jobson, even Robson (mistranscription on another census), but can’t find them anywhere. I do have Alice Jopson in 1861, living with her daughter Sarah Yeo (nee Jopson) and granddaughters Alice, Margaret, Sarah, Elizabeth and Emily Yeo. Also, I don’t think Alice Jopson is Philip Jopson’s mother, as she would have been only 12 when she had him. Unless of course her age is wrong, but it ties in with her age on the other censuses. Perhaps Philip was her brother in law. I think “mother” in the census may just refer to the fact that she is Sarah Yeo’s mother. Here is the family in 1851 (spelling as transcribed on ancestry): Philip Jopson abt 1804 Bury, Lancashire, England Head Everton Lancashire Betty Jopson Philip abt 1806 Bury Wife Everton Lancashire Daniel Jopson abt 1829 Liverpool Son Everton Lancashire Samuel Jopson abt 1836 Liverpool Son Everton Lancashire Ann Jopson abt 1839 Liverpool Daughter Everton Lancashire Philip Jopson abt 1842 Liverpool Everton Lancashire Elizebeth Jopson abt 1850 Liverpool Everton Lancashire Allice Jopson abt 1792 Liverpool Mother Everton Lancashire Sarah Yeo abt 1825 Liverpool Everton Lancashire Allice Yeo abt 1848 Liverpool Everton Lancashire Margrat Yeo abt 1850 Liverpool Everton Lancashire Registration district: West Derby Sub-registration district: Everton Household schedule number: 119 Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece: 2189; Folio: 369; Page: 30; GSU roll: 87196. Hoping someone here will have more luck finding them than I have. Thanks in advance, Sarah
