Forty years ago, I could buy a paperback for 2s 6d and I wasn't allowed the 30s bottle of scotch! (12 books = 1 bottle) Today, a standard paperback is £6.99 and the same quality scotch approx £20 (say 3 books = 1 bottle) Any convertor is vaguely suspect as it depends on the items in the shopping basket.

There are several different ways of working out what the sum would be. I like the ones where they work on average wages to give you the best sort of comparison. If you know an ag lab would earn, say £15 per year in 1840, and he was left £200 in a Will in 1843 then it puts the amount of money in perspective.

can anybody give me the url of the website where I can find out what a sum of money from years ago would be worth today (I received a copy of a will today from the probate office in York and I am really excited !)
