Im new to this and after spending almost 24 hours solid trying to navigate round this site and many others with links Im stuck. Most sites request fees in advance for you to browse records, which I'm not prepared to do. Does anyone know any other sites where I can look for names/year of birth/ place of birth records for free? I've got quite a few people on my tree but not sure where can go now to find more records. HELP! |

Have you looked on Family Search - the 1881 census is free to search on there. Good Luck Irene |

Hi Lisa Have you tried www.freebmd.org.uk - this has birth marriage and death records but only goes up to about 1910. The full BMD indexes are available at www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk - this is a subscription site but the indexes are free. Also depending on which county you are interested in, some have their own BMD sites which are free - like www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk - I know Lancashire, Cheshire and Yorkshire also have them although they are not complete. At some point though, you probably will have to use one of the sites that you have to pay for. Most are very good value and pretty much essential at some point - this hobby ain't cheap! Sam x |

If you've got back as far as 1910 and before the http://freebmd.rootsweb.*com has birth marriage and death indexes transcribed. Its a project by volunteers and not complete yet but covers most of 1837 to 1910 (remove the *) |

Thanks for your replies, this gives me more places to look. Irene - where do I go for family search you mentioned please? Most of my family lived in Stockton On Tees and I've checked the records for Tees Valley and got as far as 1900 ish so Ive done good so far. Just the earlier family Im not sure oif they lived and were born in the same area! Blimey its so complicated to find these people! (but worth it in the end) Thanks again for you tips Lisa x |
