My cousin who I had long lost touch with has sent me letters, cards and photos that my father sent to his brothers and parents during the war. After crying my eyes red raw reading them, I noticed that he keeps mentioning a girl called Alice. My mum and dad did not get married until 1949, so Alice is obviously his girl friend of the time and a serious one at that by his letters. Dad was a fireman and killed in 1977, and I miss him to bits even now...........................wish I could ask someone about Alice. Why do we torture ourselves doing this ?? |

Hi Jeanne, What a shame. I know how you feel, I would be wondering if she married someone else. whether she broke your dads heart by breaking up with him or if it were the other way around or perhaps she got killed in a bombing raid. You will probably never know, what a shame he didn't mention a last name in his letters, then you would have had a fighting chance of finding out what happened to her. Fuzzy x |

The letter came out of the blue, although my cousin knew I was carrying out some research on the family. Mum knew he had a long term girlfriend before her, but she always said she was called Rosie. My mum and dad met married and had my brother within about a year, so nothing long term about that. Dad's only surviving brother (out of 9 boys) now has Alzheimers and is away with the fairies, so can't ask him either. When I go to heaven (or the hot place) I'll just have to give them all a bloody good grilling. How can a Professor of Music, Official of the Bank of England (and owner of a Paul Rubens painting) procreate down to a Docker........................I ask you!!! I'm sitting here dreaming of winning the lottery, getting out of the East End and getting fat!!! Rgds, bitter and twisted of Wapping........... |

Jeanne, How frustrating for you, Merry once said that if she had one wish it would be for a time machine....Wouldn't that be wonderful....we could go back in time and ask our ancestors all the questions we wanted. If you ever find out who Alice was I would love to hear. Fuzzy x |

My son's Godmother has the middle name Linda - after her father's girlfriend before he married her mother. Your middle name isn't Alice is it? |
