I've got a tip for people - stop emailing me the same contacts over and over again! I am bored and very frustrated at getting the same people asking about the same names in my tree when we've already had a contact, anywhere between 2 weeks and a year ago!!!! THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK SEND PLEASE PEEPS! If you don't, then my reasonably good-natured replies will cease too! Samantha

One tries not to, but with 11 pages of contacts over 3 1/2 years and people changing their name or being under maiden name in one place and married in another the occasional slip-up does occur. Sorry!

Well, its not that easy as you are usually given just a first name as contact which means unless you go through years back contacts wont mean a lot to you. Im happy to receive any genuine enquiries be it old or new. They may have more info since they last contacted me.

I apologise if I have inadvertently done this to anyone. I tend to try to keep things tidy by deleting contacts that I have no connection with, so they don't show up in the list any more. I thought if you ticked 'don't show me this again' to a hot match, it wouldn't ever match those 2 again, so the problem shouldn't arise? Unless you upload a new gedcom, in which case ALL the names are treated as new?

I have been on this site for about 18 months and have over 30 pages of contacts. Sometimes I find someone who has a mutual name an when I try to mail them it says I have already contacted them. I spend ages going through my contacts but can't find them, probably because they have a different name for the boards. SO, I mail them again and apologise if I have asked them before.!!!! It is sometimes very difficult not to duplicate. Dea x

There are lots of people who appear as Hot Matches again and again. M.G. and Grampa Jim reload their trees on a regular basis. The Mary Edwards in their trees are not related to mine. I recognise this and delete them as a hot match until next time. But all the Lindas, Sues, Carols, Valeries, Brendas, Heathers etc, who on earth are they? I usually do go back and try to check the connection, before contacting them, but it can be very difficult to identify individuals, especially, as has been said, if you have umpteen pages of contacts and the site is on a go slow. Just because somebody has already made contact, that doesn't mean it was on that name, anyway. The best ways to reduce nuisance contacts are: 1. Choose a unique forename. 2. Don't keep uploading your tree. 3. Eliminate birthdates from the tree before you upload that final time.

When I click to contact someone I usually get told I have already contacted this person before... this is if I have contacted someone privately via the boards. If I want to contact someone who has added a name to their tree that matches one of mine then I look beneath where it says 'Previous contact' and if I have it says yes. I dont see how people would be contacting a person again and again unless the person kept re-loading their tree. I like getting contacted though... unless its one of those horrible auto things. Shaz

I'm always excited to get ANY contact. But when you have over 5,000 names in your tree as Samantha has, it must be very difficult not to match with EVERYONE I would think.

Merry Who are they then?Me,him and her? I seem to go through patches where all my contacts have the same christian name, and then have to remember who is who (the married name/maiden name thing doesn't help much either). Just checked........ 61 pages of contacts, time for a clear out me thinks. Glen

Hnads up im guilty I bugged and bugged 1 person and guess what im bloody glad I did she's my lovely cousin lol. She had the wrong first name for my dad (he did use that name from a baby but it wasnt his real name) so she flipping ignored me thinking I was some crank keep messaging her lol, it was only when I found a mutual other cousin (our uncles daughter) did she realise I wernt a crank and yep we were cousins lol. So sorry if it winds people up sometimes but id only ever do it if I was 100% sure that there was def a close relationship. Angie xxx
